18th Jan 2023 | Guitar Beginners Course | Garth Olwg Lifelong Learning Centre - Church Village

Updated: Jan 5, 2023

Realise the dream of learning how to play the guitar

The next course for guitar beginners will start on Wed. 18th January at the excellently resourced Garth Olwg Lifelong Learning Centre 6.30 - 8.30pm and will run for 7 x weeks. The course is open to complete beginners or anyone who has been struggling with learning to play either the acoustic or electric guitar. Experienced tutor Dave Beese will be again leading the sessions for students who in the past, have travelled from around the Pontyprdd, RCT, Caerphilly and Cardiff areas.

The course will set students on the path to becoming guitar players by introducing the concepts of rhythm, timing, technique, chords, reading chord charts & TAB, plectrum & single string technique and so much more. No former guitar playing experience is required as the course is assuming that you are an absolute novice!

Along the way, Dave will be aiming to demystify some of the musical jargon that musicians use such as triads, intervals, harmony and arpeggios etc. He will also discuss important 'tools' and concepts which help accelerate the learning process and help you get the most out of your practice sessions. These include:

  • Slowing down the tempo to 'practice' speed

  • Creating 'headroom' to always be in control

  • Breaking down problematic areas into smaller chunks so you can practice them loops repetitively.

  • Practicing for short periods every day as opposed to longer periods and less frequently

  • Having clear aims and objectives when practicing

  • Using 'visualisation' as a means of learning and for performance playing

  • Explaining 'muscle memory' and why it is s important

The course will also discuss the different types of guitars available today and the role of technology which includes tuners and amplification. There'll also be tips on how to re-string a guitar, what strings to use and how you can help keep a guitar in tune once you have learned how to tune it properly.

You will need to bring your own guitar, a tuner if you have one, and plectrums - ideally .73mm & 1mm. The cost of the 14 hour course will be £70 with all course notes being supplied in paper form. To get the most of this incredible value-for-money course, you would be expected to practice for 10-15 minutes as day. We will learn songs as well as well known guitar 'riffs' and create a platform for self-development following the course.

The course is an ideal introduction into how to approach the task of learning to play the guitar. Anyone is capable of becoming a proficient guitar player if they have the will and are prepared to start off by practicing daily. Playing the guitar is a hugely rewarding experience and who knows where it will lead.
